Debates Heat Up On The Direction Of Gold And Where ETFs Are Heading « David Bettencourt » Posted: 11 Feb 2010 03:01 AM PST “While many famous investors are projecting gold to soar to much higher levels, there are also reasons to expect a further pullback. The federal reserve raising interest rates, lower than expected inflation and weaker demand from China, could all negatively influence the price of Gold. Gold prices could sink to $820 an ounce by 2014, in the absence of inflation or strong demand from China, says a Citigroup analyst,” Alix Steel Reports From Nuwire Investor. Alan Heap, an analyst at Citi … [visit site to read more]

Long-Term Outlook For The Euro And The European Union « John Browne » Posted: 11 Feb 2010 01:50 AM PST The European experiment with a trans-sovereign currency is facing its first acid test. The flashpoint today is Greece, which looks set to default on its debt barring some outside intervention. While many commentators have been squawking about the immediate crisis as if it were the end of life on Earth, I would like to zoom out and discuss the history and longer-term outlook for the euro and its parent, the European Union. The launch of the euro was a major milestone in the sixty year process … [visit site to read more]

Fighting The Fed: What Does It Mean? « Jeffrey Miller » Posted: 11 Feb 2010 12:50 AM PST Investors eventually learn not to “fight the Fed.” The Fed has more power and a lot more money than you do. It is popular in the investment punditry to criticize the Fed, blame the institution and the members for all problems, and claim that nearly anyone could do a better job than the incumbents. It is great fun in the Will Rogers tradition, and very popular in the blogosphere. The audience is heavily skewed toward Tea Parties. Most of the popular bloggers and big-time pundits … [visit site to read more]
Populism = Higher Risk « Cam Hui » Posted: 11 Feb 2010 12:05 AM PST My post entitled Bare cupboards, cranky people, which discussed the social risks of a populist backlash, whether from the left or the right, brought a protest from a reader about the Tea Party movement: The history of the Tea Party Movement has been one of peaceful advocates of limited government and conservative fiscal policy, with little comment on social policy. The comment sounded innocent enough, but I was horrified to hear the reaction to Palin's Tea Party speech [emphasis ... [visit site to read more]
Five Critical Questions To Ask When Investing In ETFs « Michael Johnston » Posted: 11 Feb 2010 12:00 AM PST ETFs have surged in popularity in recent years in part because of the numerous advantages they offer over traditional actively-managed mutual funds: lower costs, potential tax efficiencies, intraday trading, and enhanced transparency. But ETFs aren't without potential drawbacks of their own. Although most funds appear relatively simple on the surface, there are some rather complex nuances as well. Below, we highlight five important questions for investors looking to avoid potential pitfalls … [visit site to read more]
Sovereign Default On A Global Scale? Marc Faber Thinks It’s Possible « Dian L. Chu » Posted: 10 Feb 2010 11:50 PM PST In a CNBC interview on Feb. 10, Marc Faber of Gloom, Boom & Doom Report went out on a limb by stating that he is not buying any sovereign debt or bonds, because ALL governments will eventually default, including the United States. Faber believes some countries like Singapore may fare better due to very little or no debt and large reserves; however, most of the developed world will be severely effected by Greece, bailout or not. In the near term, Faber is relatively optimistic about … [visit site to read more]
3 Signs Of Improvement In Homebuilder ETFs « Tom Lydon » Posted: 10 Feb 2010 10:50 PM PST Earnings season hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire this time around, but homebuilders have been a standout sector. A number of homebuilding companies have reported decent earnings on signs of a recovering housing market, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the exchange traded funds (ETFs) will follow suit. The positive signs are there: Many homebuilders are reporting “less bad” numbers for the fourth quarters, with write-downs and order cancellations declining and improving order … [visit site to read more]
The Two Stock Indexes All ETF Investors Should Know « Tom Lydon » Posted: 10 Feb 2010 09:50 PM PST There are hundreds of exchange traded funds (ETFs) out there to represent almost any conceivable theme or index. But two indexes in particular are the most widely watched in the world, and any ETF investor should be familiar with them. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has the Diamonds Trust (DIA) while the S&P500 has the SPDR S&P 500 (SPY). FinWeb says that these are the two most widely watched stock indexes in the United States, making them worth your time to watch, as … [visit site to read more]
Is This Stock Market Correction Nearing An End? « Claus Vogt » Posted: 10 Feb 2010 08:50 PM PST In last week’s Money and Markets column, I told you about some stock market indicators to watch. Since then, the market has fallen even further. So today I want to update you on what’s happening now, and what I think about the additional weakness in stocks. The main question we need to answer … Is This the Start of a New Bear Market Or Just a Typical Correction? First, let’s define our terms. A typical stock market correction delivers a 10 percent loss, give or take a few … [visit site to read more]
US Congress Pushing For Radical Steps To Shake Up Iran With New Energy Sanctions « OilPrice » Posted: 10 Feb 2010 07:50 PM PST U.S. lawmakers are toughening their stance on Iran’s energy industry with new economic penalties, but experts doubt the Islamic regime will pay much attention and is more likely to open the doors even wider to other players eager to replace fleeing investors. Long on Congress’ radar screen, Iran is being targeted by two bills: The Senate’s Dodd-Shelby Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act passed in late January; and the House’s Iran Refined Petroleum … [visit site to read more]

Ahead Of The Curve Methodology And The S&P 500: Bullish Signs Ahead « Chris Barton » Posted: 10 Feb 2010 06:50 PM PST I am a big fan of Joseph Ellis’ book “Ahead of the Curve” and the accompanying website. His methodology is to use Consumer Spending - aka Personal Consumption Expenditures - as a means of predicting future stock market movements. He did not use the raw data, but the Rate of Change of the PCE. I won’t go into the reasons this works - buy the book and check out the website for that. What I will do it try and see what we can see by charting the ROC (rate of change) of the PCE … [visit site to read more]
