EUR/USD Outlook December 26-30

Euro/dollar was struggling before the holidays. The upcoming week, between Christmas and New Years Eve, is very light in terms of events and volume. Here is an outlook for the upcoming events, and an updated technical analysis for EUR/USD.

The ECB weighed in with its massive loans to the banks: more than 500 European banks took loans that reached around 489 billion euros. The optimism from this large operation was short-lived. Peripheral bonds cannot really calm down without direct buying from the ECB.

GBP/USD Outlook December 26-30

The British pound rebounded against the dollar, climbing close to the 1.58 level, but gave up those gains by week’s end. The upcoming week is very quiet, with only two releases, both of which are housing sector indicators. Here is an outlook for the upcoming events, and an updated technical analysis for GBP/USD.

The British government deficit hit 15.2 billion in November, which although sharply higher than the October reading, was a bit better than the market forecast, and postive news for the pound.At the same time, property prices are down significantly, and most economic indicators are pointing to a recession in 2012.

USD/CHF Outlook December 26-30

The Swiss franc showed little movement against the dollar this week,  closing at 0.9364, virtually unchanged from the week’s opening. The upcoming week is very quiet, with only two important indicators. Here is an outlook for the Swiss events, and an updated technical analysis for USD/CHF.

The SNB did not have any gifts for the markets, forecasting weak economic growth of 0.5% for 2012 and  expressing concerns about deflation if the Swiss franc does not depreciate. This may well force the central bank to raise the EUR/CHF of 1.20 in order to push the CHF lower.

USD/CAD Outlook December 26-30

The Canadian dollar made significant gains against the greenback just before the holidays. The upcoming week features no significant economic indicators, so the outlook focuses on technicals.

Canadian GDP disappointed by remaining unchanged in October, the first month of Q4. On the other hand, fresh retail sales figures came out better than expected, providing hope.

USD/JPY Outlook December 26-30

Dollar/yen ticked up for a second week in a row, but didn’t too far. Household Spending, Retail Sales and Tokyo Core CPI are the highlight of this week. Here's an outlook for the Japanese events closing 2011 and an updated technical analysis for USD/JPY.

Last week Japan’s central bank released its monetary policy statement announcing the continuation of the current easy monetary policy in light of the growing concerns over European debt problems and the strong yen. The BOJ decided to leave its key interest rate near zero and continue to provide liquidity to the markets through government bonds. Will the Japanese economy improve in 2012?
