Neutral Signal For The S&P 500 « Carl Swenlin » Posted: 07 Feb 2010 05:01 PM PST On Thursday our mechanical Thrust/Trend Model changed from a buy to neutral, based upon the 20-EMA crossing down through the 50-EMA. Now our hope is that there will be enough continuing decline to cover what may turn out to be a whipsaw signal. No guarantees in that regard, but bull markets typically do not end this cleanly. The market sold off deeply on Friday, but in the end it rallied and closed up by a small amount. This looks like the beginning of a bounce of at least short-term … [visit site to read more]
Energy ETFs: Oil Industry Expands Its Horizons « Tom Lydon » Posted: 07 Feb 2010 04:01 PM PST Oil and related exchange traded funds (ETFs) have experienced huge gains off its last year’s low, and energy companies have pocketed most of the change. However, the oil industry is expanding its options into other energy fields as it anticipates the eventual depletion of oil reserves. Big western oil companies are trying to sustain reserves by expanding through acquisitions and investment, according to The Economist. For instance, Exxon Mobil (XOM) estimated that exploration and capital … [visit site to read more]
A Secular Shift? « Michael Panzner » Posted: 07 Feb 2010 03:58 PM PST Some analysts believe that what the economy is going through right now is not just a recession; rather, it is what might be called a “recalibration,” or “recalculation,” or “reset,” involving major changes in the overall structure of the economy.
Stock Market Sectors Vs. S&P 500 « Chris Barton » Posted: 07 Feb 2010 03:01 PM PST I am of the current opinion that the stock market may have made an important reversal Friday. I believe that the bounce off of the 200 ema (exponential moving average) is important. I believe that this came on high volume is also important. I believe we ought to be looking at what sectors might perform better than others in the near future. I focus on the 200 ema because this level acted as support in the most recent sell off. I want to see how the sectors behaves around that … [visit site to read more]
The Health Of Nations « Ian Wyatt » Posted: 07 Feb 2010 02:01 PM PST If the 18th century Scottish economist Adam Smith were around today, I have no doubt he would have much to say regarding the state of the world economy. The degree to which governments worldwide are influencing markets has surpassed what even modern economists thought was wise just three years ago. Setting CEO pay, influencing hiring and firing of corporate leaders, and issuing debt to fund government investment in public companies is just the tip of the iceberg. I suspect editors of … [visit site to read more]
Oil Prices Fall Sharply As Stock Market Sells Off « OilPrice » Posted: 07 Feb 2010 01:01 PM PST After starting the week on a firmer note, oil prices fell sharply toward the end of the week in a general market sell-off as investors sought the dollar as a safe haven amid worries about European Union economies. Debt problems that have plagued Greece are now spreading to Portugal and Spain, driving the euro down temporarily below $1.36 and bringing the dollar to an 8-month high. Because oil and other commodities are priced in dollars, gains in the U.S. currency usually translate … [visit site to read more]
Economic Rorschach Test « Michael Panzner » Posted: 07 Feb 2010 12:10 PM PST OK, time for a kind of reverse Rorschach test: When you read the following MarketWatch report, what’s the first thing that pops into your head? “Economy Is Recovering, Geithner, Paulson, Greenspan Agree” The U.S. economy was front and center on the talk shows Sunday, with administration officials past and present expressing guarded confidence that it’s in a recovery mode.
Your Opinion Please…. « Guy Lerner » Posted: 07 Feb 2010 09:37 AM PST I would like to gauge your interest on the following matter. I would like to monetize certain aspects of my blog content to justify the increasing amount of time and energy that I am putting into TheTechnicalTake blog. In essence, I would like to make money from my considerable research efforts. I have no interest in running a subscription newsletter, trading service or being a market guru, so don’t expect me to go that route. My idea is a bit of a hybrid model. Some bloggers make money from … [visit site to read more]
