Is U.S. Bankruptcy Near? « KhronoStock »

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 03:05 AM PST

In November of 2009 Porter Stansberry wrote a shocking headline at The Daily Crus: The bankruptcy of the United States is now certain. He writes that the U.S. has $3.5 Trillion of debt rolling over including the need for 1.5 Trillion for the new deficit. He asks a good question: Where’s that money going to come from? If you can’t raise it, you are in default. Currency speculators developed a way to predict a default. It’s called The Greenspan-Guidotti rule. “The rule states: To avoid a … [visit site to read more]

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 03:01 AM PST

Should you be worried about your stock portfolio this year? Some “experts” are saying you should be very worried. The reason? According to the Stock Trader’s Almanac “as January goes so does the rest of the year”. Since 1950 the performance of the stock market in January predicts returns for the rest of the year with over a 90% accuracy. This year the market indices were down approximately 3%, this means you should sell all your stocks right?

Not so fast. The good news is the New Orleans … [visit site to read more]

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 02:16 AM PST

United States Oil Fund (USO) said Friday that it shouldn’t be blamed for big swings in oil prices because its buying and selling of U.S. oil futures usually makes up just a small fraction of total market activity, according to a company filing.

The filing was in response to “recently published reports” alleging that commodity exchange-traded funds like USO might be to blame for big swings inoil prices. USO said its total buying or selling of U.S. crude futures averaged approximately $57 … [visit site to read more]

ETF Update: Searching For Oil « Jeffrey Miller »

Are there any bright spots in this market?

In normal times investors can use sector investing to find opportunities despite overall market weakness.  The last two years have provided fewer such opportunities.  The correlation among sectors has been very high in both directions.  Most recently, sector strength has been linked to dollar weakness.

An energy play seems counter-intuitive, but our model rates it as the top choice this week.

It is always useful to look at sector relative changes once in a while, just to spot any phase changes or shifts in leadership.

When I first got into the investment business, a grizzled veteran taught me the basic principles of sector rotation. Early in the cycle, it’s the interest sensitives that lead the way. Sector leadership rotates through the equity market spectrum until you get to the asset plays - the inflation hedge stocks at the very end of the cycle.

Thailand And Ruble Then, Greece And Euro Now « Joseph Meth »

Everyone seems to be looking at historical precedents for gauging the severity of this correction. When the Great Depression was on everyone’s mind last spring, many used the1933-35 recovery to benchmark this Financial Crises Crash recovery (see “Two Market Consolidation Models” of Sept 30, 2009). As we crossed the neckline of the inverted head-and-shoulder bottom, I looked to the 2004 nine-month correction from the dot-com Bubble Crash as the model of what this correction might look like. … [visit site to read more]

A Win-Win Situation For The US Dollar « Bryan Rich »

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 11:01 PM PST

The debt problems in Dubai threw a wrench in the happy-go-lucky risk trade of last year. And since then, the perception of the state of the global economy has been unraveling.

All of the sudden, the world isn’t as safe a place as was thought just months ago: Global stock markets are falling, commodity markets have cracked, and foreign currencies are back in decline.

All of this has been good for the U.S. dollar.

In fact, the dollar is operating in a win-win environment these days. … [visit site to read more]

What You Should Know About Commodity ETFs « Tom Lydon »

Posted: 07 Feb 2010 10:01 PM PST

Commodity exchange traded funds (ETFs) have been enjoying a good run in the past year. But some ETFs haven’t been performing as well as their underlying commodities.

For most precious metals ETFs, the ETF will likely hold the physical commodity, but in many cases, a commodity ETF just holds future contracts or notes redeemable by a bank, remarks Kurt Brouwer for MarketWatch. By investing in futures contracts and other so-called derivatives, commodity ETFs may diverge from the actual … [visit site to read more]

The Week Ahead: One Person’s Risk Is Another’s Opportunity « Jeffrey Miller »

A recurring theme at “A Dash” is the question of time frames.  Let me posit three different investors:

The Trader has a three-week time horizon.  He wants action and actively tries to time the market.
The Investor has a multi-year horizon.  Since he is not poised to sell a stock each day, he embraces the downturns in Warren Buffett fashion:

This is the one thing I can never understand. To refer to a personal taste of mine, I’m going to buy hamburgers the rest of my life. When … [visit site to read more]

Stock Picks For Monday: US Airways Group, Origin Agritech, Caterpillar « Tradesman »

US Airways Group Inc (LCC)

LCC has managed to hold the fort well and staying above the 13,26D MA during last week’s selldown on Dow Jones. $5.97 is tested on 3 occasions within 2 weeks and observed the low volume on the two black candlestick which indicate weakness in the bears. I will look for a rebound in the DJ to go long on this stock should the stock breakthrough $5.97. Also I will set tight stop loss as the general trend is down.
