We’ve started our previous essay by describing several interesting facts about the U.S. Dollar. We wrote the following:
We’ve recently read something (http://www.lewrockwell.com/margolis/margolis179.html) that can elucidate the enormous, almost incomprehensible, size of the U.S. government debt. The numbers are so huge that it is difficult for most people to get a handle them.

If you had spend $1 million each day from the time of the establishment of the ancient city of Rome-about 2,700 … [visit site to read more]

Consumer Financial Protection Or Wall Street Beating Main Street?

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 07:25 AM PST

News that a newly proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency will be housed within the Federal Reserve is another shot across the bow in terms of Wall Street owning Washington and beating Main Street.

Am I surprised by these results? Not at all. The power of the Wall Street lobby is enormous and ultimately the crowd in Washington needs the money from Wall Street in order to pretend they represent the interests of Main Street. All the press conferences and politicking on the topic of … [visit site to read more]

Argentina Gives Beans A Boost

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 07:17 AM PST

Fundamentals
The grain complex at the CBOT received a lift from extremely heavy rains in Argentina, which could cause crop damage. Grains also received support from a weaker Dollar and higher equity prices. The equity markets have been relentless, seemingly rallying every time investors expect a meaningful correction to surface. This suggests that the dismal demand outlook for Soybeans may not be as bad as many had expected, and the resilience of the economy may stoke the flames of inflation. … [visit site to read more]

Making Sense Of Today’s Stock Market Moves

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 06:55 AM PST

As long as we’re having throwdowns on the whys and wherefores of the market these days, I may as well put in my two cents’ worth.

First, I want to preface by noting that the entire reason we are having these arguments is because U.S. stocks are pretty much the same price today as they were some six months ago. Indecisive runs like this are by definition the result of mixed news, or perhaps more precisely, mixed understanding of the facts on the ground on the part of investors.

It’s a … [visit site to read more]

Warning: Three ETFs That Could Be Crippled By Contango

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 06:34 AM PST

The surge in popularity of ETFs is often credited with bringing buy-and-hold investors a cost-efficient alternative to traditional actively-managed mutual funds. But ETFs are also responsible for bringing several asset classes previously available only to the largest and most sophisticated individuals and institutions within reach of investors on all levels.
While this "democratization" of investing is generally a positive development, it does come with some potential pitfalls.  The … [visit site to read more]

Recall that mortgage hedge funds at Bear Stearns cratered in spring 2007. At that point, Wall Street was becoming much more risk averse while shepherding the use of its own capital and balance sheets.
