Morgan Stanley Still Bearish On US Housing Market

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 09:01 PM PST

The equity markets can and will do whatever they want, but when I look at the economy I remain steadfastly fixed on our housing and labor situation. When these cornerstones of our economic landscape not only stabilize but show marked improvements I will become more constructive on our overall outlook. Are we there yet? No way.

Thanks to a loyal Sense on Cents supporter, I am happy to provide Morgan Stanley’s (MS) U.S. Housing Outlook for 2010. What are the key points to this … [visit site to read more]

Russian output, about four-fifths of which comes from state-run OAO Gazprom, … [visit site to read more]

The Ranks Of The Downbeat Grow Bigger

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 07:43 PM PST

Aside from policymakers, economists, and stock traders, the number of those who don’t see any real evidence of economic recovery continues to grow.
Along with millions of ordinary Americans, small business owners, corporate executives, and charitable organizations, state and local governments are downbeat about prospects for the period ahead, as Reuters reports in “Shortfalls for US Cities Could Reach $56 Bln-Report”:

U.S. cities will face a collective budget shortfall of at least $56 … [visit site to read more]

New Bank Profit Tax May Hurt Financial Industry, ETFs

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 07:01 PM PST

Bonus season is coming around and lots of big bankers are likely to receive a fat check. This has spurred another round of public outrage and the government has taken steps to funnel away some of the money back to taxpayers. What may be good for taxpayers might not be good for banks and related exchange traded funds (ETFs), though.

President Barack Obama will try and get back as much as $120 billion of taxpayer money by taxing large banks, specifically, a tax on profits, reports Jackie … [visit site to read more]

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 06:31 PM PST

It’s make or break here at the 4.0% level again for 10-Year Treasury Yields.  Let’s take a look at the monthly and weekly chart to emphasize the importance of the dividing line at the 4.0% area.

Ten-Year Yields Monthly:

The monthly chart is showing overhead resistance from the falling 50 week EMA (blue), currently at 38.  The way StockCharts labels the price, the 38 actually represents the yield level of 3.8%, which is how you should interpret the 'price’ levels.

Investors Should See “Red” Over Massive Corporate Espionage

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 06:01 PM PST

Enough is enough.

Corporate espionage emanating from China has reached too far. It is high time that investors recognize that western business in China, and in most democratic industrial societies, is under relentless attack by computer hackers and other agents under the watchful, deliberate eye of mainland China’s government apparatus. Tens of thousands of times a day, corporate data systems are hacked. Proprietary information worth billions of dollars is stolen as a routine matter, … [visit site to read more]

Forex Trading: Charts Indicate That The Euro Is Still On Pace For Near-Term Test Of 1.4680

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 05:39 PM PST

The U.S. Dollar finished lower after a choppy trading session. Even upbeat Beige Book data failed to stimulate buying interest in the Dollar. The Greenback traded higher last night after Germany announced that its economy had shrunk more than expected in 2009. Hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Plosser also triggered a rise in the Dollar.
The Dollar could not hold its earlier strength and broke sharply lower ahead of the New York opening before mounting a … [visit site to read more]

Will Shareholders Force Google’s Hand To Have A Presence In China?

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 05:20 PM PST

Google’s (GOOG) foray into China had never gone swimmingly, the “Don’t Be Evil” chants turned to scoffs as the company told the world its better to have a censored presence in China than no presence at all. The pitchforks subsided and its been business as usual for the company as it slowly built a base of business, taking on the dominant local Baidu (BIDU).

Having now built a business, that according to analysts represents about 20-25% of the market, Google is becoming entrenched … [visit site to read more]

Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission Questioning

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 05:14 PM PST

I did not expect to learn anything riveting from today’s Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission’s questioning of the Wall Street CEOs and I didn’t.  Why?

The executives being questioned represent the survivors or are new to the game. Who are they?

Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs (GS)
Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan (JPM)
John Mack of Morgan Stanley (MS)
Brian Moynihan of Bank of America (BAC)

The Commission will be at work during calendar 2010, but the initial performance will … [visit site to read more]

Expect Some False Starts In The Economy And A Bear Market Rally For Stocks

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 05:01 PM PST

From the start of the economic and financial crisis that began in 2007, I made it clear that this was not a garden variety recession. Instead, I said, it was the aftermath of the bursting of the largest real estate bubble the world had ever seen.
Many developments of the past three years support my thesis. Now I predict that this will not be a garden variety recovery either. We should expect some false starts in the economy and a bear market rally for stocks.
And my prediction has two … [visit site to read more]

PRICES OF residential properties, now at 8% below the 2007 peak level, will exceed the peak by end of this year, predicted Goldman Sachs (GS) in a report Wednesday (Jan 13).

It said foreign buying will underpin local demand, which has yet to run its course.

“We expect the high-end to lead for the better part of 2010; there is still positive carry in rental yields, as rents hold steady even as consensus braces for a 10% decline.

“Mass market is more subdued, but affordability and … [visit site to read more]

Watch This Commodity In 2010

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 03:27 PM PST

If there is one commodity that I believe will be worth watching in 2010, it will be natural gas. Natural gas has the technical characteristics of an asset poised for a secular trend change from down to up, and I believe the price action over the past 4 months has already confirmed that a trend change is underway.

When we last visited natural gas, it was back on September 2, 2009. At the time, I stated the following:

“The close below three pivot low points is a pattern that I have identified … [visit site to read more]

Talisman said that it will boost its capital expenditures by about 10% in 2010, as it focuses on promising shale gas programs. However, despite hiking the capital budget, Talisman expects the overall production rate to be flat from 2009 at around 425,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
